Another Brief Hiatus

My house is a wreck. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but it really is. I am a total slob. So I'm not allowing myself to do anymore cosplay work or blogging until I get my surroundings organized and presentable to guests. There's so many reasons to do this.

1. It just feels better to be in a clean house.
2. I can start filming all those cosplay videos I've been wanting to make.
3. I can have friends and family over - Parties!
4. My projects will turn out looking a lot better with more space to work and all the pieces in order.
5. Room for exercising!
6. I feel bad spending time on cosplay and writing and then having my husband come home to such a mess.
7. I won't spend as much money buying new things I keep losing.

So there you have it. I hope it doesn't take too long! Sorry about this!

Cosplay Is My Anti-Drug

I am stepping out of the planning and collecting materials stage of my new cosplay and am starting to finally create the pieces. I am still doing some research on the character and figuring out how I need to portray her, but I think that is a never ending part of cosplay.

Summer has been keeping us pretty busy. We spent a week at a resort in Scottsdale, two weekends with friends in Phoenix (going for a third this weekend, yay!), a weekend camping near Sunrise, and a week in Thatcher. Needless to say, we've been making the most of our summer vacation. While at home, I feel bad abandoning my husband to work on cosplay, so we've been working together finally unpacking moving boxes and getting rid of clutter. We've got one awesome looking game room, now. Unfortunately, in order to get there, our guests must survive passing through the wreckage of the rest of our house. On top of all that, we've been working on making an rpg based on one that is a classic in Caj's family, but, I digress.

My husband is in training now to prepare for the new school year, so I now have time once more to devote to cosplay. Gathering reference pictures, watching videos, and finally getting to see my costume take form has given me quite a rush. I can hardly breathe with all this anticipation. My heart races with each new idea I get for a performance. I am elated, and it's all because I see myself accomplishing something. Not just something for myself, but something I hope will bring smiles and laughs to others.

Who needs drugs when you can feel like this?

Maybe this will help narrow down possibilities.

My cosplay is not from an Anime or Manga.

Standing Out

I'm the kind of girl who is almost repelled by popularity. If I see something is getting an abnormally large amount of fans, I tend to avoid it. Unless a personal friend or someone I admire recommends it, of course, because I will give just about anything a try. It's not really so much that I dislike something because it's popular, but more because I like to go for the underdog. I think like this, "Well, that's getting a lot of attention, it doesn't really need more. Let's find something that isn't getting the appreciation it deserves."

So I've been studying trends in cosplay and trying to find what people are saying isn't being cosplayed enough. I want to do something different from the overly cosplayed characters. I want to give something to the fans who are like me, who gravitate towards shows and games that don't get enough attention. Unfortunately, the results of my search were unhelpful. While I also loved quite a few suggestions, a lot of them were from the slice-of-life/high school genre.

These shows are great, they truly are. They often have very deep stories, complicated characters, and beautiful artwork and music. They are appealing because there is always something or someone we can relate to. But they are horrible for choosing cosplay costumes! Why? Because the costumes are all very ordinary.

I don't like to admit it, but part of why I cosplay is because I want to stand out. I want to get noticed. I want people to flock to me and want my picture. I spend so much of my life hiding behind the scenes. I don't demand to get noticed in every day life, I just like to keep things under control so others can have more time enjoying themselves. I kid you not, there is a video of me at a friend's 4th birthday party at Chuck-E-Cheese, and while everyone is playing in the ballpit, laughing and throwing balls at each other and whatnot, I'm walking around the outside picking up stray balls and gently placing them back in.

That is why, just for a short weekend out of each year, I'd like to go to a convention and be noticed. I'm not about to spend all this time sewing a costume for Generic High School Girl C to be cast off as a closet cosplay or even a non-cosplaying attendee. And it's not just about the attention, it's also for the challenge. How is a basic shirt and skirt going to challenge my sewing abilities? It won't. And something I've always believed is anything worth doing in life is the most challenging. There is no joy or sense of accomplishment in doing something easy.

I believe the best genres for choosing a cosplay is from fantasy and sci-fi. The costumes and characters are extraordinary and eye-catching. They provide so much for creativity. The costumes call for great amounts of detail and the stories provide out-of-this-world fodder for skits and videos. We spend so much time as ordinary people in real life, isn't cosplay our opportunity to step out of that for a little while and be someone different? So why would we cosplay High School Girl when we could stand out for once as Sky Pirate Captain?

The Legend of Cac-Totoro

Once there was a Wifey who was terrified of spiders. One day it seemed all of the spiders in her town decided to take up residence in her home. When her Hubby was out of town on a camping trip, she had to take care of herself and kill 11 spiders! She was sick of being scared all of the time, so she became determined to do everything to get rid of them once and for all. One piece of advice she was given was to put some eucalyptus around the house - bugs and spiders hate the smell of eucalyptus! She didn't have any access to eucalyptus, and she found out that the youngest ones at the local nursery cost $99! She didn't have that sort of money, so she found a store that sold eucalyptus seeds for really cheap and decided to grow her own.

Now this little Wifey had a brown thumb. Everything she tried to grow became sick and died. But she loved trying to grow plants anyway. To improve her chances of growing something, she bought four eucalyptus growing kits. Surely at least one will grow. She soaked the peat pellet and planted the seeds, and waited patiently for her trees to grow. But what appeared were not the eucalyptus trees she was expecting...

Little Cactus Totoro! They were shy at first... Hiding in the shadows...

But soon they invited many more of their friends!

While the Wifey was delighted by these CacToro, she was still a little sad. What she needed was her eucalyptus tree to keep the spiders away.

So the CacToro set to work, like any wonderful Totoro does best, to help the tree to grow.
And one night... POP!

Many, many eucalyptus sprouts burst from their soil growing tall!

The overjoyed Wifey exclaimed, "Thank you, CacToro! I couldn't grow anything without you!"
